Enfants du Monde improves monitoring for pregnant women
These days everything is going well for Alimata and her baby. They’re in good health. That’s not something that can be taken for granted. In Burkina Faso, 371 out of 100,000 women die during pregnancy or childbirth each year. Burkina Faso is one of the countries in the world where mothers and babies die most.*
Thanks to the health programme implemented by Enfants du Monde, Alimata has been able to benefit from free pre-and post-natal visits to a doctor and gave birth in a health centre in the presence of qualified staff.
In addition, the Birth Preparation Card has helped her be better informed about pregnancy and better prepared for possible emergencies. This card informs women about good practices during pregnancy, how to react when complications arise and how to prepare for childbirth.
In several regions, the local population supported by Enfants du Monde has built maternity waiting homes. They are located near health centres and pregnant women can spend the last few days of their pregnancy there awaiting the birth in complete safety.
Our strengths:

- Husbands throughout the region have changed their behaviour and are committed to improving the health of mothers and babies.
- During information meetings, pregnant women and their families learn to recognise complications in pregnancy and how to take better care of themselves and their new-borns.
- The medical staff is trained in better counselling for pregnant women and their families, and this leads to improvements in the quality of care.
Enfants du Monde works in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso, the United Nations Population Fund, UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, and local organisations.
