OUR HEALTH PROJECTS IN MADAGASCAR

Enfants du Monde improves the health of Malagasy children and mothers

Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest countries, where over 78% of the population lives below the poverty line. 2 million children younger than 5 years old suffer from chronic malnutrition, making child malnutrition one of Madagascar’s biggest challenges.

Since 2021, Enfants du Monde has been working with our partner NGO C.O.P.E (Cooperation for the development of emerging countries) as part of a nutritional education pilot programme, in three primary schools in Ambanja. Its main objective is to disseminate the principles of healthy food and nutrition within the community.

In addition to issues related to malnutrition, health care for mothers and new-born children is quite basic in Madagascar. Six out of ten births take place at home, and there are 353 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 20 new-born deaths per 1,000 live births.

In order to reduce the number of deaths, Enfants du Monde, in collaboration with the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and the Ambanja District hospital, trains health care personnel in the respectful care of pregnant women and their new-born babies.
