P.A.N.D.A. telemedicine system

New technologies for future mothers

In Burkina Faso, although 86.2% of women give birth in the presence of health professionals, the maternal mortality rate remains one of the highest in the world - 371 deaths per 100,000 births. In remote areas of the country, the situation is even more worrisome. Access to quality medical care is often difficult, and pregnant women do not always receive adequate follow-up for their pregnancy. This is due, among other things, to the lack of training and organisation of midwives, nurses and auxiliary midwives working in rural areas. Therefore, if the complications are not detected in time, the lives of the mothers as well as those of their babies could be in danger.

In an attempt to remedy this problem, Enfants du Monde, as part of its program to improve the health of mothers and newborns in Burkina Faso, took part in setting up an Android telemedicine system, P.A.N.D.A. (Pregnancy and Newborn Diagnostic Assessment). This project was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso and the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG).

Preview of the P.A.N.D.A. application

Already successfully tested in Madagascar and adapted to the context and health system of Burkina Faso, the P.A.N.D.A. system provides quality prenatal care for pregnant women. It assists health staff in all stages of a prenatal visit by collecting medical information, performing tests and provide health awareness among pregnant women. The telemedicine system thus makes it possible to review and transmit the actions to be adopted throughout the pregnancy. The pregnant woman and her family are better prepared for childbirth and know what needs to be done to stay healthy and if complications occur.
