The global health crisis of COVID-19 threatens to hit the people of Haiti particularly hard. The country’s already very fragile health system is unprepared to identify and follow up COVID-19 cases. A large proportion of the population lives in very precarious conditions and does not have access to basic resources such as soap and water. Health personnel lack protective equipment and become a source of COVID-19 transmission. Lastly, it is difficult to get information on protective measures out to regions distant from the capital.

Enfants du Monde has been active in Haiti since 2014 in maternal and newborn health. To combat the spread of the epidemic, our local partner has begun to set up water points with soap for health centres and communities and to inform the population, especially pregnant women, in the communes of Petit-Goâve and Grand-Goâve in the West Department.

However, we are still in need of funds to enable us to carry out all the necessary prevention measures, as detailed below:

  • distribute masks, gloves, hydro-alcoholic gel, glasses, etc. for 53 caregivers so they can protect themselves from the risk of infection and thus protect their patients;
  • make water points with soap available for 11 health centres and 2 hospitals (Georges Gauvin Hospital in Grand-Goâve and Notre Dame Hospital in Petit-Goâve) at the entrance, in the delivery rooms, at the doors of antenatal check-up rooms and waiting rooms;
  • broadcast messages on how to prevent COVID-19 on local radio, by town criers and on social networks, in order to raise awareness in remote rural communities;
  • produce and distribute specific posters on maternal and newborn health and COVID prevention, thereby raising awareness for around 2,000 pregnant women.
