New health project in Haiti

13-09-sante-haiti-integree30.09.2013 - In Haiti, when pregnant women experience health problems, they will initially seek out help from traditional healers before going to a health centre. The latter will often be far away, sometimes a walk of several hours, and have few qualified staff.

Jean Dulcis Caries, a nurse in Haiti: "Women don't like to come and give birth in a health centre. They prefer to do so with a traditional midwife. They only call us when there are complications. Unfortunately, it's sometimes too late by then."

In partnership with Médecins du Monde, Enfants du Monde has set up a new health project in Western Haiti. The aim is to improve care for pregnant women and their babies and to increase villages' involvement in health programmes.

This pilot project will be run in the towns of Petit-Goâve and Grand Goâve and will reach almost 3,000 pregnant women.
