22.04.2013 - The Global Campaign for Education’s Action Week is taking place from 21-27 April 2013. Based on the theme, “Every Child Needs a Teacher”, the focus this year is on encouraging states and civil society to take effective action to ensure that every child has a qualified teacher. The reality at present is that many children who have succeeded in going to school are educated by inadequately trained teachers, and leave primary school barely able to read and write. In Niger for example, there is only one trained teacher for every 1,318 children.
This is an especially significant issue for Enfants du Monde. Schools alone are not enough - qualified teachers are needed too. As this campaign seeks to demonstrate, “without teachers, a school is just a building, and without trained teachers, schooling is not education”. This is why Enfants du Monde works not only to make education more accessible but also to improve its quality, with particular emphasis on the training of teachers and trainers.
In parallel with this, 800 children from Burkina Faso, Canada, Haiti and French-speaking Switzerland are taking part in the “A song for education” project, which aims to raise awareness of the fact that there are so many children in the world without access to education. The various songs written by the children are currently being recorded. Compilation CDs of their songs will then go on sale, and the profits will go to the schools in Bazega Province, Burkina Faso, which are run by the NGO ASIBA, and supported by Enfants du Monde.
