100 more villages get involved

Une femme tenant dans ses bras un nouveau né07.05.2012 - In Bangladesh, where the maternal mortality rate is a hundred times higher than it is in Switzerland, thousands of children lose their mother every year. And yet it does not have to be like this.

In collaboration with PARI, its local partner, and the Ministry of Health, Enfants du Monde is helping to save the lives of women and babies by improving the quality of healthcare and access to it.

This work is producing results. An assessment by an independent research institute has confirmed a reduction in the maternal and infant mortality rates and an increase in the use of qualified health care practitioners during childbirth. For example, the proportion of babies delivered by qualified health workers doubled between 2009 and 2011.

In the light of these promising results the programme has been extended to another 100 villages, bringing the total number of villages involved to 167.
