Nasima, midwife in Bangladesh

01.11.2012 - In the remote village of Uripur in Northern Bangladesh, pregnant women have to walk more than ten kilometers to seek the medical help and attention that they require.  Thanks to the health program supported by Enfants du Monde in that region, midwives like Nasima visit pregnant women in their homes to follow their pregnancies and to counsel them.

Nasima is one of three professional midwives in that region and has to service over 150 villages. Nevertheless, she always takes the time to listen: “When I meet a woman and her family, I try to understand as much as I can the difficulties and the fears that they are facing. This way, together, we can find solutions that are tailored to their particular needs.”

During these visits, she also gives a document detailing birthing preparations and emergency situations. This allows the women and their families to better plan the birth and to better manage the pregnancy. Additionally this document illustrates the different danger signs that the family must watch out for such as: hemorrhages, fever and abdominal pain.

Nasima says: “The discussions related to this document permit to save lives of women as well as new borns”.

From 2008, in collaboration with PARI, its local partner in Bangladesh, Enfants du Monde enables pregnant women and their families to better prevent possible complications linked to pregnancy and labor due to, amongst others, an assisted preparation for the birth. Over 900 pregnant women and new born children benefit from this project.

By supporting this project you are saving two lives: the life of the mother and the life of her baby.
