01.17.2011 - Since 2001, Enfants du Monde has been supporting 5 bilingual and intercultural schools in Guatemala. Recently, the Ministry of Education in Guatemala intrusted Xch’ool Ixim, Enfants du Monde's local partner in Guatemala, to introduce the same educative approach to 45 public schools from the Alta Verapaz area, in the North of Guatemala.
Xch’ool Ixim offers indigenous children a Spanish bilingual education - q’eqchi (one of the principal mayan languages) and multiculturalism. This schooling, adapted to their culture but also open to the world, is designed to improve their chances of development in their own society but also their successful integration in the Guatemalan society. Over 5'000 Mayan children benefit from this sort of quality education.
This experience raises many hopes in the indegenious minorities from other areas of the country as well.
